Meet our new member Dora.
This smart, cute little INDog-mix is seven years old and lives in Mumbai with owners Arati and Prashant Nadkarni, and the family cat Billoo.
Prashant tells us Dora's unusual adoption story:
"Dora was being raised by our neighbor in Chennai. The neighbor was an old lady who suddenly fell sick and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, due to which she did not recognize the dog she was raising. Since Dora was so friendly and had been kept for at least four years by her, I did not want her to end up on the streets, so I adopted her and brought her home to my Mumbai residence."
Soon after bringing her to Mumbai, the Nadkarnis adopted Billoo. Dora is devoted to Billoo, as you can see from the photos. She is a very affectionate dog and plays with all the children in their colony.
Prashant adds: "She has the uncanny ability to sense that we are coming home, so she starts to bark when we reach our building. Also she recognizes our ring tones and starts barking as soon as she hears them."

So cute! My advice is that if you are raising a pup it is worth while socializing him with not only other dogs but with cats and possible other pet animals while he is still young. For an adult dog who is not familiar with cats it might be too late. If you don't have a cat make visits to your friends and neighbors who have cats with your pup as often as you can. I'm saying this because I have a dog who feels fierce hatred towards cats (I adopted her as adult) and it makes life sometimes a bit complicated!

I guess dogs should be exposed to cats at the "critical period" mentioned by the Coppingers and others, between 2 weeks - 4 months of age. Dora must have been socialized with cats at that age. I was lucky with Kimaya too. I got her when she was 5 months old so I wasn't sure how that would turn out, but I walked her near my building cats to test her, and she was nervous of them. Lalee was 10 months old when I adopted her, and she did try to chase cats at first, but I scolded her and smacked her nose immediately and that worked. I don't smack the dogs but in this case I wanted to make it very clear to her right at the start that I wouldn't tolerate attacks on cats.

I had a different experience with Poochie. Silky was there when we adopted Poochie. Poochie I know regarded Silky as a four-legged meow Mum. She used to take care and guard over Silky's kittens - Silky littered every three months.
So as far as Silky and her kittens were concerned all was well. But as far as other cats were concerned, well they were meant to be barked at and chased!!!

Kimaya has become "sort of" friends with MiniPini too, though Mini was once almost killed by dogs and is naturally not too fond of them. But she's understood now that Kimaya is harmless. So she leans against her affectionately, and then stands up on her hind legs and slaps the poor pup a few times to keep her from getting uppity. Poor Kimaya gets bullied by Lalee and Bandra and both the cats too! But she's so good-natured and sweet, she just wags her tail and puts up with it.
hi all! my friend chimayi, has 2 adopted cats,angel is 9 yrs old while sonu is 4 yrs, then she adopted a stray female pup, named her spotty( the pup was the one who came in last), the dog wants to be friends with the cats but the cats just dont like her, they attack her.spotty has learnt to defend herself but my friend constantly wories what if one day she decides to go a step further and show her canine skills?!
See if there's anything here, in Q&A - http://www.canis.no/rugaas/ This kind of thing is a problem because in any conflict, the dog will win and the cat could be injured or even die. There was a case recently in which 2 pet dogs killed a cat they were playing with. Best tell Chinmayee to punish the dog if she shows any aggression towards the cats, even in retaliation. I smack Kimaya's nose if she teases my cats too much. Also as far as possible, don't leave the dog and cats alone together.
