India's birthday post

This is to celebrate India's tenth birthday! She turned 10 on February 25 this year.

India went to NYC with Caroline Walker as a tiny puppy. If you've been following our blog from the beginning, you'll remember her first story here. And also these photos of her playing with Leela, and their movie.

Look at her first puppy video, in a hotel in Mangalore, Karnataka. (The other puppy in the video also got adopted in the US).

As Caroline says, 'You can see some of the same personality traits in her...as she backs away tentatively and tries to get a read on the situation.'

My very nicest memories of NYC are of the day Kiran and I spent there in November 2008 with Caroline, India, Yvonne and Leela; roaming around Central Park and going for a walk and lunch, and even taking the dogs to an art gallery. Strangers stopped us in the street to admire the dogs and ask what breed they were. 

That year they even appeared on the Martha Stewart Dog Show!

Happy birthday dearest beautiful India, though we are a month late. We wish you many more wonderful years and birthdays!

Am I just biased or are my dogs seriously beautiful??

INDog owner Neha Arora came over to do a photo session with my pups, and here are some of the images. I think she really captured their good looks better than I have ever been able to do!

Radha eight months later

Constance Hills sent an update on beautiful Radha. What a lovely life, with lots of outdoor play and dog friends!

Our INDog-mix Radha from Tamil Nadu, now lives with us in San Francisco, CA. We have had Radha for almost eight months now, and her adjustment is remarkable.

Chocos and Jelly outdoors

I really love these photos of beautiful Chocos and her daughter Jelly, sent by owner Vandana last December. 

























How lucky these dogs are. Though they aren't exactly in a rural area, there is obviously a lot of open space, greenery, even goats and cattle around. Enough for them to experience the life of village dogs; the life their ancestors lived. 

I sense a rather self-congratulatory tone in many big-city Indy adopters, perhaps justifiable since they have, after all, saved the lives of street dogs. 

Of course being in an urban house or apartment is safer than living on a city street. But I wonder whether one can call the lives of these city pets really high-quality in spite of the safety and all the sofas and beds and cushions they get to lie on; the fancy dog treats, collars and gear and birthday parties and Facebook accounts. 

These are poor compensations for having to walk always on leash, always on concrete, never getting to explore or discover, never getting to interact freely with other dogs, never getting to use their sharp brains. For having to live most of their lives cooped up indoors. 

My favourite thing is to see INDogs getting the best of both worlds, like Chocos and her daughters!
